Vulcans to host Lancers in softball

Vulcans to host Lancers in softball

Another weekend, another tough home assignment for UH-Hilo’s softball team.

Fresh off playing two of the top teams in the Pacific West Conference last weekend, the Vulcans welcome conference favorite California Baptist to their field Saturday for a noon doubleheader. Last weekend’s opponents, Azusa Pacific (10-2) and Dixie State (8-2), occupy the top in the conference standings along with the Lancers (8-2).

Cal Baptist rides in on a six-game winning streak, having shut out its opponent in four of its last six games. Caitlyn Lloyd paces the offense with a .431 average, four home runs and 17 RBI. Three players share the pitcher’s circle with a team ERA of 2.48, led by PWC pre-season Pitcher of the Year, Ashley Coleman.

The Vulcans only scored three runs in going 1-3 last weekend and are hitting .263 on season.

During most weeks, Vulcans junior Cyanne Fernandez would be the reigning PacWest pitcher of the week after throwing 14 innings and allowing only one run, seven hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. However, Hannah Rose Balke of Academy of Art pitched 10-hitless innings to nap the honor.

Fernandez has whittled her ERA down to a team-best 1.02, and has given up only 17 hits in 27.1 innings pitched, with teams hitting just .179 against her. Senior Danielle Wilson is 4-3 with a 3.78 ERA.
